Five Chinese Brothers

Yesterday, I grabbed these Potstickers out of the freezer case of the 99 Cent Store. I followed the directions on the package for the recommended cooking technique - a little oil and water in the bottom of a pan, and boiling, and steaming them (not defrosted) until done in about 8 minutes. I didn't get the nice golden brown tone I was aiming for, but they were still delicious. I paired them with Roasted Garlic and Vegetable Noodles that were 60 cents a pack from Big Lots, I believe. I added a little shredded broccoli, carrots and cabbage (broccoli slaw from Taylor Farms - 99 Cent Only Store), and my signature "Crazy Asian" dippin' sauce, which is really just a lot of different things in my fridge - Garlic Vinegar, Spicy Ketchup, Asian sesame dressing, and mustard (all from one dollar store or another).

It all came together quickly, and cost less than a buck a serving. I suppose it was all inspired by this video of one of the weirdest kids' books I remember - Five Chinese Brothers.

Happy Birthday George!

Happy Birthday George Washington, and praise the Dollar Bill that bears your image. With it there would be no Dollar Stores!

Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies - Dollar Store Version

It's Girl Scout cookie season, and the girls are in high gear selling their wares. I love Thin Mints are much as the next guy, but I can enjoy a reasonable facsimile all year long from the Dollar Store.

Barbara Dee Holiday Winter Mints cookies taste just like Thin Mints - that is if you close your eyes, and ignore that the cookie part is not a dark brown and contains little flecks of red peppermints.

I really hate to horn in on the Girls' turf . . . there is no telling what fate might befall me . . . but I'm cheap. There, I said it. And I don't really appreciate being strong armed by a pint size person in a uniform, even if they are sporting a pixie cut - I have authority issues . . . but enough about me, now for the remix:

Valentines' Day Treats from the Dollar Store

. . .

I just couldn't resist this Puppy Luv chocolate from the 99 Cent Only Store - again by Palmer Chocolates.

Now, sing it Donny!

Sauerkraut Sausage Ball Redux

Yum, yum, I've been waiting all year to make more Sauerkraut Sausage Balls!

Hoppin' John for New Years Day

In the South it is traditional to eat black eyed peas for New Year's to bring Good Luck. I'm not a fan of Black Eyed Peas by themselves, but I am a fan of them with other stuff and seasoning added, and Hoppin' John really fits the bill.

I bought this can at the Dollar General Market for $1.00 and it is going to be even better with some cheese sauce added to make a creamy soup - because January is NATIONAL SOUP MONTH!!!
